The Story

Vibrant sweetness and hints of apple crumble and molasses?Sounds good! This coffee was processed at Rwamatamu’s Mbare washing station, situated in Muhanga, Southern Province, 65 miles from Nyamesheke. It is a family run business established by husband and wife team Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laeticia. Community is a big focus in Rwamatamu. In Namesheke is the Woman’s cooperative, where land and seedlings are provided to the women who are interested in coffee farming and also they provide employment outside the harvest season. In Mbare they focus on younger generations in coffee farming under the Youth association.

Once it arrives after picking, the coffee is spread out to dry on raised beds and sorted by hand. Over the 26-33 days they take to dry, the cherries are turned and further sorted while the sugars and fruit flavours seep into the bean. The coffee then gets taken to the milling facilities in Kigali, where the coffee is dehusked, polished, and graded.
