The Story
The Land of a Thousand Hills, the small but stunning East African nation of Rwanda is home to some wonderfully bright and complex coffees. And as one the country's most valuable crops, its production of high-quality, high-altitude coffees works in tandem with a collective societal effort to raise people out of poverty. This fully washed coffee from the Koakaka coop is no exception to that effort.
Koakaka’s coffee is grown at the edge of the Nyungwe rainforest, a protected natural reserve and green lung of the region. With over two decades of experience, Koakaka produces a vibrant cup profile that has resulted in great acclaim, including in 2016 when Koakaka coffee was recognised by RWASHOSCCO as the best coffee in the country.
The cooperative developed after the tragic genocide against the Tutsi ethnic group in April 1994. 3 coffee farmers associations operating in Karama, Kinyamakara and Rukondo joined forces, consisting of 867 members then.
