The Story

This coffee hails from the remote region of Montaña Alta in Guerrero, home to the Me’phaa indigenous community. As caretakers of the coffee forests near Oaxaca, Guerrero plantations employ the principles permaculture and environmental protection. This often makes the 'farms' indistinguishable from the natural forest with such a diverse biosphere of plants and animals surrounding the trees. Also, almost all of the coffee in this region is naturally processed, another contributing factor to Guerrero's unique reputation in Mexico.

Brought over by our import partners at Ensambles Coffee, a values driven green sourcing company who work exclusively in Mexico. With a deep commitment to environmental custodianship, they've built and nurtured a network of producers and other supply chain actors with the aim of providing prosperity to all.

Interestingly, the name of this coffee comes from Mexican folklore, which is rich with stories and beliefs centred around the myth of the Nahual. Having its roots from the Nahuatl term 'nahualli,' it portraits the concept of being hidden or in disguise. In the Me'phaa cosmogony, the Nahual is the ability to transform the human body into the shape of an animal, such as a fox, jaguar, or squirrel, among others.
