The Story

Based on the island of Sumatra, the Barkokah farm cooperative live and farm on a plateau that sits at the foot of the volcanic Mount Kerinci. It’s one of the many volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer horseshoe-shaped series of 452 volcanoes that are part of an almost constant dance of eruptions and plate movements. Kenrinci’s historic eruptions have contributed towards a unique terroir that is lush and verdant with a deep supply of volcanic soil.

Volcanic soil you say? Is that a good thing for growing coffee? Damn right it is! When volcanic ash settles on the soil, it acts as a natural fertiliser, enriching the ground with elements such as magnesium and potassium. But that's nature you know, doings its thing, helping those farmers grow some tasty beans for all of us.

Almost all farms on Sumatra are smallholdings, being on average 0.5 to 2.5 hectares in size. With this natural lot, cherry is rigorously sorted before being delivered to dry on raised beds. The beds are located in domes to protect the coffee from rain or harsh sunlight. Here, the coffee will be sorted again and turned regularly to ensure even drying. All this work results in a boozy yet refined cup with a syrupy sweetness. All the things you know you want in a natural!
